Bodeoksa Temple is a branch temple of Gwanneungsa Temple, the head temple of the 23rd district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, founded in 1943 by constructing an 18-pyeong dharma hall in a thatched-roof building. Enshrined in the Daeungjeon (Main Hall) of Bodeoksa Temple is a 17th-century wooden seated Buddha statue that An Bong-ryeogwan brought from Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam at the time of the temple's founding. This statue was recognized for its value as cultural heritage material and designated as a cultural heritage material of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. With a total height of 66cm, it is considered large in scale. It is famous for an anecdote that during the modern revival period of Jeju Buddhism, Seonbong Seunim (monk) traveled with it (the statue) to various temples, thereby invigorating Buddhist activities there. In 1992, a stone statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was enshrined within the precincts of Bodeoksa Temple, marking its rebirth as a Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva sanctuary and leading the way in the salvation of all sentient beings. Bodeoksa Temple, which has consistently carried on the legacy of the revival of Jeju Buddhism, continues to serve as a refuge for many Buddhists praying for their wishes to be fulfilled, attracting a constant stream of visitors even today.
