Bulthapsa Temple is located in Samyang-dong, Jeju City, and is a subsidiary temple of Gwaneumsa Temple, the 23rd district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Bulthapsa Temple is situated at the foot of Mount Wondangbong. Wondangsa Temple, the main temple of Bulthapsa, was one of the three major temples in Jeju Island during the late Goryeo Dynasty. Most of the temple buildings were destroyed during the Jeju 4.3 Incident in 1948 and were rebuilt in 1953. Since then, it has undergone several rounds of repairs and expansions to reach its current state. Currently, the temple grounds include Daeungjeon (main hall), Yosachae (monks' quarters), Jonggak (bell pavilion), and Cheonwangmun (four heavenly kings gate). In particular, the five-story stone pagoda preserved here is the only Goryeo Dynasty stone pagoda in Jeju Island and was designated as a treasure in November 1993.
