Anguksa Temple, the only ancient temple remaining in Jeoksangsanseong Fortress, is said to have been built by the monk Wol-in in the 3rd year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo (1277). In the 6th year of King Gwanghae (1614), a record hall (Sagak) was established within Jeoksangsanseong Fortress, and in the 19th year of King Injo (1641), Seonungak was established, where the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and Seonwonrok, the royal family tree, were enshrined as part of the Jeoksangsan Royal Archives. At this time, Hoguksa Temple was built to defend the archives. Although Anguksa Temple existed before then, it was used, along with Hoguksa, as lodging for warrior monks who protected the record hall, and thus came to be called Anguksa. Due to the construction of the Jeoksangsan Pumped-Storage Power Plant, this temple was moved to the site of Hoguksa Temple, so Anguksa Temple is now located on the Hoguksa Temple site. Nearby are Muju Resort, Rajetongmun, and Gucheondong Valley, which can be visited together.
