Samhwasa Temple, surrounded by Mt. Dutasan and Mt. Cheongoksan, is a subsidiary temple of Woljeongsa Temple, which belongs to the Jogye Order. It was founded in 642 by Monk Jajang under the name 'Heullyeondae' and renamed 'Sanggongam' by National Preceptor Beomil in 864. It holds the history that King Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo earnestly prayed for the unification of the Later Three Kingdoms at this temple and achieved that great feat in 20 years. Later, in an effort to transform the conflicts and hatred stemming from the Three Kingdoms into a place of communication and harmony, Sanggongam was renamed 'Samhwasa'. At Samhwasa, you can enjoy the Samhwasa Temple Stay mountain temple experience. The natural splendor, allowing one to experience valleys, mountains, and the sea all at once, is the pride of Samhwasa Temple Stay. Except for the communal meal times and sleeping hours that are essential in a temple, most of the time can be comfortably spent at your own will. You can enjoy unconstrained relaxation and rest as you engage in practices aimed at looking into your inner self, such as having a conversation with a monk over a cup of tea, letting the sound of the water from the Dutasan Valley refresh your ears, and experiencing the day through the sounds of the mountain temple's wind and the chirping of insects, all while communing with nature.
