Samnaksa Temple was founded, originating from the time during the reign of King Munmu of Silla when three individuals – Great Master Wonhyo, Great Master Uisang, and Lay Buddhist Yunpil – built hermitages and practiced asceticism. According to records, Great Master Wonhyo founded the temple, and at the end of the Silla period, National Preceptor Doseon rebuilt it and named it Gwanneungsa. Later, King Taejo of Goryeo renovated it and renamed it Samnaksa. Samnaksa is a historic temple, home to the largest number of national heritage items, including the Samnaksa Three-story Stone Pagoda from the Goryeo Dynasty, the Samnaksa Rock-carved Three Buddhas from the Joseon Dynasty, and the Samnaksa Historic Monument. Among these, what people seek out most are the 'Namnyeogeunseok' (Male and Female Root Rocks), two naturally formed rocks. These rocks, named because two weathered rocks resemble the shape of male and female genitalia, are said to be effective for childbirth and prosperity, and for health and longevity if touched. The power of word-of-mouth is surprisingly strong, making one truly want to seek them out and touch them. The area around Samnaksa has quite a few good courses not only for hiking but also for cycling. Samnaksa Valley is widely known as a popular spot for water play in the summer.
