Bongwunsa is an ancient temple with a thousand-year history, located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, a central area of Seoul. It was founded by National Preceptor Yeonhwa in 794 and was originally called Gyeonseongsa. Later, in 1498, Queen Jeonghyeon, King Seongjong's second consort, extensively rebuilt this temple, which was located east of King Seongjong's royal tomb (Seolleung), and changed its name to Bongwunsa. During the Joseon Dynasty, it served as a leading Seon (Zen) temple representing the Jogye Order, and in modern times, it became the foundation for the establishment of the Dongguk Sutra Translation Institute, which undertook sutra translation projects and trained disciples. Today, Bongwunsa is creating a new chapter in Buddhist history through its practice-centered temple operation. Through diverse programs including Temple Stay, Buddhist College, and Sutra School, it is not only widely promoting high-quality Korean Buddhist culture both domestically and internationally but also striving to maintain its status as a major urban temple that also realizes social welfare.
