Temple information

Sajasa Temple Site is located near the summit of Mireuksan Mountain in Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do. Mireuksa Temple was founded following an incident where King Mu of Baekje and Queen Seonhwa witnessed the Maitreya Triad during a royal procession. For this reason, Sajasa holds significant meaning in the history of Baekje Buddhism. During an excavation in 1993, a roof tile inscribed with "Jichi 2nd year, Sajasa" was unearthed, confirming this as the Sajasa temple site. At the site, along with traces of building foundations from the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, artifacts such as Unified Silla pottery, Baekje roof tiles, Buncheong ware, celadon, and white porcelain were discovered, indicating the coexistence of remnants from various periods. Currently, the Daeungjeon (main hall), yosachae (monks' living quarters), and one stone pagoda remain. After the excavation, the Daeungjeon was restored on the site of the former main hall, in a slightly expanded form.
