Haeinsa Temple is one of Korea's three greatest temples, founded in the 3rd year of King Aejang of Silla by two monks, Sunung and Ijeong. It is also famous as a Dharma-treasure temple (Beopbojongchal), originating from the "Haein Samadhi" of the Avatamsaka Sutra. King Taejo of Goryeo, in gratitude to Heerang who stayed at this temple and helped him overcome Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje, designated Haeinsa as a national temple of Goryeo and bestowed 500 gyeol of land upon it. Haeinsa Temple is a Dharma-treasure temple and one of the ten great Avatamsaka temples. The term 'Haein' originates from the Haein Samadhi of the Avatamsaka Sutra, and Haeinsa Temple is a spiritual training ground established to proclaim the Avatamsaka (Hwaeom) ideology. Haeinsa is called a Dharma-treasure temple (Beopbo Sachal), one of Korea's Three Jewel Temples (Sambo Sachal), because the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks, which are a Dharma-treasure (beopbo), are preserved in its Janggyeongpanjeon (Tripitaka Koreana depositories). Haeinsa Temple has many halls, including Janggyeongpanjeon, Daejeokgwangjeon, Myeongbujeon, Dokseonggak, and Eungjinjeon. Its affiliated hermitages include Wongdangam, Hongjeam, Yongtap Seonwon, Gounam, Ganwoream, and Cheongnyangsa.
