Around Mihwangsa Temple

Mihwangsa Temple

Mihwangsa Temple, located on the western side of Mt. Dalmasan (489m), also known as the "Geumgangsan of the South," and the southernmost temple on the Korean Peninsula mainland, was founded in the 8th year of King Gyeongdeok's reign (749 CE) in Silla. It once prospered, boasting 12 hermitages. However, it gradually declined after monks who left to rebuild the temple a century ago were shipwrecked at sea. This long-empty site began to breathe new life when monks Jiun, Hyeongeong, and Geumgang arrived in 1989. After more than 10 years of reconstruction, its halls, including Myeongbujeon, Daeungbojeon (Treasure), and Eungjindang (Treasure), have been beautifully restored, transforming it into one of Korea's most beautiful temples. Mihwangsa always offers a spectacular view, with the sunset over the West Sea blending harmoniously with the unique rock formations of Mt. Dalmasan. Notably, the foundation stones of Daeungbojeon feature carvings of marine creatures like turtles and crabs, a rare sight elsewhere, adding to its intrigue. Walking for about 10 minutes along a forest path leads to a stupa garden (budobat) where visitors can find simply carved child monks and goblin faces. The mountain peak is about an hour's walk away, offering an exceptionally beautiful panoramic view of the Dadohae Archipelago. ◎ Travel Information to Experience the Charm of Hallyu - Drama 'Mihwangsa Temple on Mt.
