Yeongwolam Temple (Icheon)

Yeongwolsa Temple, nestled at the foot of Seolbongsan Mountain, is an ancient temple offering a panoramic view of Icheon city. Legend states that Uisang Daesa founded it during the reign of King Munmu of Silla and named it Bukaksa Temple, but there is no definitive evidence to support this claim. Based on relics remaining within the temple grounds, its founding period is presumed to be from the late Unified Silla to the early Goryeo Dynasty. Cultural heritage items such as the Standing Rock-carved Buddha at Yeongwolsa Temple (Treasured No. 822) and the Stone Halo and Lotus Pedestal (Icheon City Local Heritage No. 3) are preserved at Yeongwolsa Temple. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was recorded under the name Bukaksa Temple, and it is said that in 1774, Master Nanggyu of Yeongwol renovated it and changed its name to Yeongwolsa Temple.
