Temple information

Naksansa Temple is a major tourist attraction and a scenic spot of great historical value, representing Yangyang-gun in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Founded by Great Master Uisang in the 11th year of King Munmu of Silla (671 AD), it is an ancient temple regarded as one of Korea's three great Gwaneum holy sites, along with Bomunsa Temple in Ganghwa and Boriam Hermitage in Namhae. Naksansa Temple, with its beautiful scenery overlooking the East Sea, is one of the Gwandong Palgyeong (Eight Scenic Views of Gwandong, referring to eight scenic spots in Yeongdong, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province), and its beauty has been celebrated in numerous classics and poems since ancient times. Naksansa Temple is a historical temple that has undergone several reconstructions and restorations, and it houses various cultural heritage properties. Well-known among these include the 16-meter tall Haejae Gwaneumsang (Statue of Seawater Gwaneum); Uisangdae Pavilion, built on a coastal cliff and a famous sunrise spot on the East Coast; Hongnyeonam Hermitage, a hermitage overlooking the sea; the Seven-Story Stone Pagoda of Naksansa Temple in Yangyang (a designated Treasure), built during the Joseon Dynasty but inheriting the Goryeo style; and the Airborne Sarira Stupa, Stele, and Sarira Embellishments of Haejae Gwaneum at Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, where sarira reliquaries, including Buddha's true sarira, were discovered. In 2005, a large forest fire occurred, destroying over 20 temple buildings, including the bronze bell which was designated as a Treasure, but currently, all have been restored and have regained their former appearance. ◎ Travel Information to experience the charm of Hallyu - It is recommended to walk 'The Path Where Dreams Come True' that Reno walked, placing a small stone on one of the countless stone pagodas, and making a wish.
