Guryongsa Temple

It is said that the temple was founded by Uisang Daesa in the 8th year of King Munmu of Silla (668 AD). A pond where nine dragons lived was filled at the site of the Daeungjeon (Main Hall) to establish the temple, which was initially named Guryongsa [九龍寺]. However, it is believed that it was renamed to its current name, Guryongsa [龜龍寺], in the mid-Joseon period, in connection with the legend of the Turtle Rock. Additionally, according to the 'Historical Record of Chiaksan Guryongsa,' it is recorded that the temple was founded by the eminent monk Doseon Guksa at the end of the Silla period. Currently, a roof tile inscribed with characters from the 45th year of Kangxi has been excavated, which indicates that Guryongsa was rebuilt in the 32nd year of King Sukjong (1706). To the left and right in front of the Daeungjeon (Main Hall), there are monastic residences such as Seosangwon, Bogwangnu, Jeokmukdang, and Simgeomdang. Additionally, there are Wongtongmun, Guksadang, Sacheonwangmun, Beomjonggak, Eungjinjeon, and other buildings. At the temple entrance, there is a cluster of stupas from the Joseon Dynasty, as well as the Turtle Rock, which narrates the legend of Guryongsa, and a Dragon Pond located beneath the waterfall. Furthermore, there is a Hwangjanggeumpyo (Forbidden Timber Zone Marker) made during the Joseon Dynasty, which is a sign prohibiting unauthorized logging in the pine forests of the Chiaksan Mountain area.
