Naksansa Temple is a representative tourist attraction and a scenic spot of great historical value in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Founded by Uisang Daesa in the 11th year of King Munmu of Silla (671 AD), it is considered one of Korea's three great Gwaneum (Avalokiteshvara) holy sites, along with Bomunsa Temple in Ganghwa and Boriam Hermitage in Namhae. This temple, with its naturally beautiful scenery overlooking the East Sea, is one of the Eight Scenic Views of Gwandong (eight famous scenic spots in Yeongdong, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province), and its beauty has been celebrated in numerous classical works and poems since ancient times. Naksansa is a historic temple that has undergone reconstruction and restoration multiple times and possesses various cultural assets. Well-known cultural assets include the 16-meter-high Haesu Gwaneum Statue (Statue of Avalokiteshvara overlooking the Sea), Uisangdae, a pavilion built on a coastal cliff and a famous sunrise spot on the East Coast, Hongnyeonam Hermitage, which overlooks the sea, the Seven-story Stone Pagoda of Naksansa Temple in Yangyang (Treasure), built during the Joseon Dynasty but inheriting Goryeo Dynasty style, and the Haesu Gwaneum Gongjung Saritap (floating reliquary stupa) and Stele of Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, and its accompanying sarira ornamentation (Treasure), where Buddha's true sarira and other ceremonial relics were discovered. In 2005, a large forest fire caused the loss of over 20 temple buildings, including a bronze bell that had been designated as a Treasure.
