Eungseoksa Temple was founded in the 15th year of King Jinheung of Silla, the 24th monarch (554 AD). Eminent monks such as Muhak, Noeong, and Jigong Daesa resided there. A ridgepole inscription records that the temple's ridgepole was raised in the first year of the Qianlong reign (1736) during the Joseon Dynasty, and that it was renovated in the third year of Gwangmu (1899). Equipped with auxiliary buildings such as the Iljumun Gate and monks' quarters, and with its surroundings well-maintained, the temple boasts its appearance as a traditional temple and its outstanding scenery. Many of its halls were burned down during the Imjin War but were rebuilt thereafter, so the Daeungjeon (Main Hall) and other structures retain the architectural style of the late Joseon period. In modern times, revered monks like Gusan Suryeon stayed there, establishing the Seon (Zen) tradition and guiding later generations of disciples.
