Jeokmyeolbogung is a place where the true relics of the Buddha are enshrined. Jeokmyeolbogung means a precious palace where the mind is unswayed by all external boundaries and free from afflictions. It represents the state of the Buddha, free from suffering because there is no greed, anger, or ignorance. A unique feature of Jeokmyeolbogung is that, since the true relics of the Buddha are enshrined, no Buddha statue is created inside the Dharma hall; only an altar is installed. This Jeokmyeolbogung, standing prominently in the center, surrounded like a folding screen by mountain ranges flowing down from Birobong Peak, was considered an auspicious site (myeongdang) that many people yearned for, with some even describing its formation as a dragon playing with a wish-fulfilling jewel (yeouiju).
