Mugaksa Temple, located on Mt. Yeoui in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is a practice temple and cultural space in the heart of the city, serving as a Pure Land that leads not only Gwangju but also Honam Buddhism. Mugaksa Temple was founded in 1971 by the Venerable Gusan of Songgwangsa Temple, who gathered the efforts of local Buddhists. It has played a significant role as a spiritual refuge for the patriotism and Buddhist devotion of the soldiers at Sangmudae (Combat Arms Training Command). As Sangmudae, which had served as a training ground for soldiers until the early 1990s, relocated to the Jangseong area, Mugaksa Temple began to garner attention as a practice temple in the heart of the city. Since the Venerable Cheonghak was appointed in 2007, it has been undergoing full-scale development. Currently, Mugaksa Temple operates both one-day and experiential temple stay programs, ensuring a continuous stream of visitors.
