Tongilsa Temple was founded in 1983 by the nun Venerable Choi Seon-gyu to honor the spirit of her husband, who died during the Korean War. It is said that the nun's husband, Mr. Seo Hyeong-seok, as a student soldier during the retreat on January 4, 1961, fought against a large unit of Chinese Communist forces with a single platoon on the Western Front. When all his comrades were killed in action, he himself bravely took his own life. After that, the nun, now a widow, built the current temple here on Guksabong Peak to assuage her profound grief and constantly continues to chant Buddhist prayers for the unification of the homeland.
