According to the 'Wongaksa Sajokbi (Monument Recording the History of Wongaksa Temple)' recorded in 1984 concerning the founding and history of the temple, in 1927, during the Japanese colonial period, Japanese monk Aoki Taro founded a small temple of the Japanese Higashi Hongan-ji school, and its name at the time of its founding was Jinjosa. Immediately after liberation in August 1945, the current abbot, Chunmyeong Changseok, took over Jinjosa, changed its name to Wongaksa, and gradually expanded its scale. In 1968, the Main Buddha Hall was built, and in 1970, a new Bell Pavilion was constructed. In 1975, a five-story stone pagoda was enshrined through the donation of benefactress Choi Yeon-hwa. In 1976, a Maitreya Buddha statue was enshrined.
