Yongdamsa Temple is situated next to Sindeok Reservoir in Munseung-ri, Sinni-myeon, Chungju-si. It is a temple at the foot of Munsungsan Mountain, with the mountain embracing the temple. It was founded in 1962 and is a small temple featuring a Daeungjeon, Beomjonggak, Yosachae, and Sansingak. As it is not a well-known place, visitors can enjoy a quiet stay. The Maitreya Buddha stele within the temple grounds is a monument commemorating the benevolent rule of Yi Guk-heon, who served as Chungju Moksa for two years starting in 1689, with the Maitreya Buddha image carved in intaglio upon it. Climbing the stairs made of discarded tires leads to the Sansingak, and following the path for about 100 meters from the temple grounds brings you face to face with the Stone Standing Buddha, Yongdamsa's Maitreya Buddha. This Stone Standing Buddha, dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty, was discovered in a river during the construction of Sindeok Reservoir in the Japanese colonial period. It had only the body, without its pedestal, and was enshrined in Seondang-ri. Later, in 1977, its pedestal was discovered in Songam-ri, not far from here, and in 1978, both parts were moved together to Yongdamsa's current location. It is a cozy-sized temple with mountains stretching out behind it, and the Goryeo Dynasty stone Buddha is known as the Yongdamsa Stone Standing Buddha. Nearby attractions include Jungangtap Historic Park, the Liquor Museum, and Chungju Rowing Experience School, making them good places to visit in conjunction with the temple.
